How do I talk my wife in to an aquarium? She thinks it is going to cause a lot of mess. I have not had one since I was a kid. After I saw this site and all your nice pictures, I really want to get one. Well if any one has pros vs cons for an aquarium, let me know.

Any response appreciated.

There are no cons Brutus :) Just tell her it is a tank or a mid-life crisis corvette...

Pros:

Aquariums can be a beautiful centerpiece for a living room, and is a great conversation starter, if properly maintained.

A larger tank is easier to maintain than a smaller one.

Aquariums can help lower high blood pressure.

Its better than watching a TV. :dive2:

Cons:

Its a lot of work to keep maintained and beautiful.

Some fish need special care to be healthy

If not maintained, it can stick up the whole house

If not properly leveled, the tank can burst; bye bye floor

Can be rough on your back changing water every week/2weeks

What you can do is get a small tank (small meaning ~30G because smaller tanks could be more maintenance) that is simple and pretty self maintaining to get her "feet wet" :D

I have a 29G that is very self maitaining. No plants, and good amount of fish. It has some good decor with some driftwood which make it appealing. It has 8 Yellow Labs and one 12" Pleco that does not know when to stop growing. It also has two pond snails that reproduce often which feed the pleco and yellow labs (they love snails).

I change water once a week and clean one of the filter sponges (AC 500). Total maintenance time is ~45 minutes AND that includes feedings (~5 minutes a day).

WHen she realizes tanks can not be high maintenance you can drop the pretty tanks on her may it be sw or fw.

There are no cons Brutus Just tell her it is a tank or a mid-life crisis corvette... I wonder if I can use that excuse later on to get a bigger tank when we get a house - hmmm, think of the possibilites

Good luck on your quest

Xielos is right tanks are proven to lower blood pressure and they are a great decoration for your house they can be a bit pricy (well for me atleast im only 16 with a girlfriend and no job) to set up but overall i wouldnt say they are troublesome to maintain esp. if you have hardy fish but i have never had a regret spending money on my tanks except for when i first started i put dwarf puffers in with an angelfish BIG mistake

I thought of more points....

Btw - tanks are great. My fiance and I live in an apartment (cant wait for house) and we have MANY tanks. Before I met her I could care less about fish. Now she has created a aquarist MONSTER :p:

We have 1 55G, 1 30G, 1 29G full aquarium, 1 29G Vivarium with firebellies (boy are they LOUD!!), 1 10G and 2 5.5G's now. The 5.5G tanks are displayed in our entertainment center piers - one on each side. That is 134Gallons of tanks to maintain. I maintain the two 29G's, 1 30G and 1 5.5G. It takes me ~2.5Hours a week to maintiain them. WIth ~70% of the time being on my 30G which is planted.

Tanks can be QUITE the decor accent to an ensemble (if that makes any sense). We sort of go for the whole jundle/wildlife ensemble in our living room - I think that is what it is called...

Again, Good luck

DAMMIT! BE A MAN! Don't ask...just get it....if there is a mess, tell her to clean it up!

Now, with your next wife, may I suggest that you use the "it's an attractive piece of furniture" con, or...."doctor says it will cure my (insert disease here)"......tell her that studies show it will relieve her stress, particularly when you pis her off...like when you buy a fish tank....tell her you are fish sitting for a friend named Joe......two months later, tell her your friend Joe was abducted by aliens and is being probed 300 million light years away and won't be coming back....maybe say its a baptismal pool for your new found religion? You see, there are many, practical arguments for getting a fish tank....show us the pics real soon!

I started my tank by using the excuse that it was for my son. I bought a 10 gal. so it wouldn't be so obvious. Now she knows it was for me, but what she didn't realize is that she is now hooked. I even caught her searching on ebay for a larger tank...WooHoo...Good Luck...

it is true that it can be pricy but if you really want a tank you can find some one selling things cheap thats why most people come on here because im only 14 with no job or allowance and i have two tanks a 10g with plants cryptos, watersprite, and grass and one piece of driftwood. the fish are a couple baby guppies(that luckily aren't getting eaten, but i hope i can add the rest of my guppies) 3 white clouds, sucker fish, skunk loach, and two other fish that im not quite sure what they are and my tank is doing fine. they are also extremely fun to look at, so fun in fact my friend snuck into my room when i was watching my fish that i wouldnt even have realized him if he didnt say something. but i also have a 50g trying to get it off the ground but since my parents arent even helping me its been sitting there since the beginning of the summer and the only way i got it was i was helpin out my moms friend and asked if they were using the fish tank and they so no so when they moved into my neighborhood i got it for free. so you could get lucky with something like that :thm:

LMAO fishboy......and I agree. Just do it man! Youre a grown man...get the **** fish tank if you want one. Its not like buying house and youre not going to a strip club or anything. Something low maintenance around 30 gallons or less will be easy to take care of. I have a 55 gallon, a 10 gallon and a 6 gallon...plust a 2 gallon Betta tank sitting on my desk in the office......hmmm why arent I married?

fishboy, that was flippin hilllllllaarious

If i might add to the other well-thought-out ploys, I would say that after you get that initial fish tank (you know you will :D ), if you want to get more, or bigger, fish tanks this is a guaranteed method right here. It sounds corny at first but stick with me.

Do many many fish related things in front of her.

examples:
*go to fish stores often and spend lots of time there just "browsing"

*visit fish websites for long durations of time then afterwords share with her what you have learned

*make "fish friends" and talk to each other constantly, whether at the bar or on the phone, in "fish code"

*finally, and this is the eaaasiiiiest one, stare off into space with the "Im deep in thought" look. When she asks what you are thinking about, shrug your shoulders and say "Oh, just looking for flaws in my potentially new livestock plan"

After a month or two of this you will be officially branded a FISH DORK. And heres the trick. Women love dorks. I dont know why, they just do. So they will back you up on your little "fish fetish" as long as it doesnt injure the bank too badly and you let her joke about you (in a loving way) to her friends.

Thats it. Thats the secret.^^

If it was me I would A) tell my wife I was going to get a tank, and B) go get the tank. She should, of course, have a say in the size of the tank since there may be budgetary considerations. I would also take her to the pet store and let her choose at least one type of fish to stock the tank with. If she knows that you will be doing all the maintenance I don't really see what the big deal is. An aquarium, especially if it is planted, can be a beautiful centerpiece for any room. I do all the work on my tanks and my wife can just sit back and enjoy them.

You didn't say if you had kids. Kids are a built-in excuse. You can even put a tank in their bedrooms.

Find out what her chief objections are- is it the cost, the space issue, the labor, the time, the possible tackiness and find ways to ameliorate and/or compensate for them.

I'm with Yo here. I did stuff like that all the time and my tank looks lovely in the back seat of my car. No need to worry about multiple tank syndrome when she gets the house in the property settlement.

Alternatively you could give her a tank for some sweet sentimental anniversary and look really hurt if she even looks like she doesn't like it.

It's up to you but do you really want to turn in to this guy:

Amen brother. DON'T make it a p!$$!n match. It WILL take alot of your time initially! It MAY be a mess from time to time initially. It takes time to get it the way you want it. If she gets involved as a positive influence, you'll be less likely to throw the hammer/boot/tv remote etc at the tank later when she's complaining AGAIN about "that d@m^ tank".

HERE is what you do...
1) Find a DECENT restaurant with a NICE aquarium in it. Reserve a seat near that bad boy.
2) Enjoy dinner and with that Barry White voice, mention how nice an aquarium would be at the house.
3) Discussion ensues about all the research you've done here at AC. You talk about the pros and cons. How you can spend more time together (cuz you could be at the bar with buddies "being a man" or be home looking after your tank).
4) After a nice dinner and good conversation, return home, light the candles, and THEN be a man!

The aforementioned "be a man" replies are correct in a sense that she should accept you regardless of your new interest, but "there are many ways to get there from here".

With that awesome avitar EMG you can be anyone you want.

A troll is anyone who spend their time wasting everyone else's time here. whether it be through purposeful posting of mis-information, inciting negativity, or just creating unnecessary questions to keep everyone distracted. I would love to see Bob come here and spend time constructively. the more the merrier, but when I realised this was just another deception thread setting everyone up for the turn of events, It's easy to See Bob doesn't mean to help anyone but rahter would like to cause trouble. I've never understood people who are so bored, selfish, or juvenile that they must spend their time hurting others no matter how minor oer extreme that hurt may be. Bob, why don't you grow up or go away and leave people alone. either one would be welcome as far as I'm concerned, but the current situation isn't making any friend for you and certainly isn't doing anyone including you any good.

Hi everyone,

Bob's girlfriend here! Yes, that's my pretty picture with the ugly horse.
Bob was dong the talking though, not me. I actually do know a lot about horses though, and other animals and even fish.

I don't know what hapened here. Bob told me last night he "didn't lke making up stores". He didn't like being "banned" for expressing his opinion. He does have a point. I don't believe you should be "banned"
unless you make threats or are abusive, and Bob did prove that "banning"
well, there are ways around that, so maybe he should have been allowed to express his thoughts. A person can always hit "delete" I belonged to an un-moderated forum for two years, and there was something that was good about that, whether or I agree with the way Bob expresses himself, and making up stories is not a good thing to do.

I do want to say that Bob has done a really great job with the tanks. The fish are healthy and he is very conscientious "Pinky", knows Bob and jumps when he enters the room. We did recently rescue a baby oscar from walmart after having martini's but, sorry we're not perfect.

I have always really loved fish. I have a fascinaton with them, so it has been great having 4 fish tanks. I also want to say that I think the people on this site are great and I hope you won't "ban" me, but allow me to read
and lurk and if I have anything to contribute allow me to.

-RoseMarie

Bob was most likely banned for giving Ill advice and defending the idea of overcrowded tanks repeatedly. I do not know for sure and don't even care why he was banned. But I do know that many people had to work really hard to undo the damage Bob tried to do here, and his actions since being banned are both juvenile and unnecessary. He could easily have found a way around the ban, returned and been beneficial, but he did not. he found away around the ban and started the same crap that caused him to get banned before. To defend grossly overcrowded tanks, Rumors and myths, offer poor advice , and then try to claim that he is doing a good job of caring for fish is kind of like shooting yourself in the foot to get rid of a wart. I would gladly have Bob here (not that my opinion really matters) if he would not cause a lot of trouble and contribute to the betterment of this hobby somehow. There are many things done by many people that do not fall under the category of "A good idea" but they are not offered as advice to beginners and are not defended when questioned. There is a far cry of difference between having an overcrowded tank, and defending it as an acceptable practice. Bob had been a huge disruption and a pain to a lot of people, and when he was cautioned by many he became a bigger pain instead of being sensible about what anyone had to say. As said earlier, I'll be the first to welcome him back if he wants to contribute something positive, we see our share of trolls here, and they become easy to spot after a while. We are all here to learn, and Bob could learn a lot without creating strife and confusing people who genuinely want to gain knowledge.

It really does take a lot to get banned, It's not something that most of us like to see happen, but when someone causes enough trouble, it does happen.

Just my two cents (which will by nothing in today's world)
Dave

Wow... and so the story continues

There are many animals that are kept as pets and are consumed, even dogs unfortunately. However, those kept as pets are usually afforded better treatment than those kept as food. In Bobs tanks this is not the case. And, as Dave said, there are probably lots of people who keep their tanks in ways that are not ideal, but these people do not defend their practices, nor offer them as appropriate set ups to newcomers. BIG difference
