I was wondering if there is a difference between turtle tanks and aquariums and if yes how to tell the difference.

I saw some interesting tanks in the local classifieds for upcoming garage sales - but i want to make sure that if i get one it can be used as an aquarium.

enclosures built to be terrariums are not strong enough to hold a tankful of water. th glass would be thinner, it will be hard to figure out unless you have seen and been around a lot of tanks though.

Well if i take a measuring tape to the sale and look up the appropriate thickness for certain size tanks (as an example 30 or 40G - which is what i am looking for) ahead of time - and then measure it once i see the tank - do you think that would be safe ?

possibly, except glass can be tempered or untempered. You can not see the difference, but tempered glass is considerably stronger.

well garf has some sort of glass calcualtor thickness on their site but there isnt a standard that the manufacters use. and you can try checking for the quality control inspection on the bottom of the tank. im sure most will be gone for tanks that have had some use but i dont recall seeing any reptile tanks with those on them.

There is a chance that they are the "Naturary" tanks (what a stupid name) that All-Glass now makes. One of the side panels on these tanks only comes half way up. This is so you can put a hang on back filter in it and still have top of tank dry for crawl out spots. It might be cool to do some kind of waters edge tank with emergent vegetation in them.
