I recently bought what was described to me in the shop as a blue lobster. However, the only blue bits are his claws or so they were and I have been informed that it is not a lobster but a crayfish. Can someone confirm this and tell me what species this is as I know very little about little ‘lobby’.

He lives in my peaceful aquarium at a steady temperature of 75-77 for about 3 months now and is rarely aggressive as I only have 1 fish which lives at the bottom and all he does is tip over my plants. I have 12 live plants and many many hiding places for him to gather his thoughts.

Any information regarding this creature would be much appreciated. I would also like to know why his ‘blueness’ has gone. He has shed his skin twice where his claws had been blue in the past but he has not regained any of the ‘blueness’.

Thanks.

a lot of lobsters are considered crayfish because they are small. same with crayfish being called lobsters if they are big. so the store is probably right

It's a little difficult to tell, but I'm pretty sure he's a Cherax Quadricarinatus, common name Australian Red-Claw crayfish.

Seeing as I own one, I'm fairly certain.

looks kinda like a cherax quadricarinatus to me. look on bluecrayfish.com to see if any of those matches yours but the one you have looks australian in my opinion. would like a bigger picture though
