ok i need a little help. i recently, just yesterday infact, came into possesion of a green terror cichild. well...i think it is, we got it in petsmart and now having been cruising the net a little looking for info it looks more like the pictures of the jack dempsey that i have seen :( . Well no matter what it is tis the same problem. when we got him home we realized that on one side he has had some of his scales scratched off. I think this is caused by the way he was trying to jam himself underneath the one ornement petsmart keeps in their tanks. i am a little worried though, do i need to do anything or should i let him recover by himself?

also...he is on with 2 albino oscars...all bought at the same time, i know that a green terror has a good chance of being peaceful with oscars but if it turns out to be a jack dempsy will he be ok? if anyone can provide good pictures of the green terror males and females maybe i can tell what he is


any help will be greatly appreciated

either fish the Jack Dempsey or the Green Terror should be a fine mix with the two Oscars. Providing the tank is big enough?? If it were me id put the 3 of them in a 150gallon tank. Anyway the scratches should be ok. Cichlids get banged up and scratched, part of their nature i guss you can say, they are tough and shoudl recover easily form mior scratches.

ok thanks for the info. i know the tank for them is a little small, but they arent my fish, just ppl who i live with so not much i can do. im so jealous though :rolleyes: hehehe

it is hard to tell the diffrence bettween the two :confused: is there any identifying marks or something i can look for on the one we have?
 
the GT will have a short high sloped head almost square looking, the Dempsey will have a longer streamlined head. The GT if its the Gold Saum like i posted it will have the pronounced orange egde on the tail and dorsil fins. The Jack Demspey will have a very thin red tipped marking along the dorsil fin, in a small specimin it may not be noticable on the JD and the the GT it will be noticable. Most GT thta ive had or seen were very person responsive, much like an oscar, and every JD ive ever had was shy and skittish as a juvenile. yes a GT will always have that green/blue lined marking on the jaw but not usually has bright as the one posted above. The one posted above is one of the "nicer"colored ones ive seen especially for a female. the Jack demspsey will have a spotted pattern not lines like the GT. the GT usually will have large dark spot in the center of its body. snap a pic if you can??

i couldnt snap a pic but i looked for the things you said and this leads me to think it is a jack dempsey. bloody petsmart =/. oh well it is still a beautiful fish =). ill try and get a pic later so you can id it properly for me lol.

holy crap, all this time i thought i had a green terror too. then i looked at the pictures the other person posted and saw i had a jack dempsey all along. that's funny. petsmart labeled the fish wrong. i wonder if it's the same petsmart. i buy mine from the Fort Wayne, Indiana location.

i had an argument with one of the women at petsmart over a fish. i wanted to buy a turquiose severum, but the lady working there said it was a black convict. i told her, i know what a severum looks like, and that is a severum. after arguing for about 2 minutes she finally gave in. people working there have no idea what they are doing or what they are talking about. most of them are teenagers anyway.

guess i'll take my business to the local mom and pop fish stores and not the corporations anymore.
 
Have you even seen the list of cichlids those store say you can fit in a 55gal? Its something like 2 oscars. 1 Jack Dempsey. 2 Convicts and 2 Severums. I can see why people over stock. It might be petco? It's one of those 2 chains.
