I was looking around for sand and I saw a sand made my quikrete. All its says on the bag is Quikrete Medium Sand. Its is a white sand and says it may contain silicate. It looks pretty fine and I am wondering if this would be okay to use?

If it's silica sand it should be OK. A good guy to ask is gcvt. He went the alternate-southdown route (blasting sand, I believe) and could probably give you some options.

I guess that guy from Chicago on RC didn't have anymore SD?

Satchmo is right. I used pure white silica-based sandblasting sand in my tank. I'm not absolutely positive, but I believe it is '125 grain' sand. The grain size is a tad bit finer than sugar. It's been in there for a year and it's working very well.

The grain size is very important and the only Quikrete sands I've seen locally are too large. Your store may have something mine doesn't though. Before you try the Quikrete, I'd recommend calling a few sandblasting places and asking about what they have. You could also use appropriate pool filter sand. I would also think these two sands might be cleaner than Quikrete...but that's just a guess.

If you haven't seen this link yet, here's a very informative article on Deep Sand Beds: http://www.rshimek.com/reef/sediment.htm

Hope that helps.
