Anyone have an easier way of doing water changes? I use the syphon tube to drain the tank and clean the subtrates but as we all know syphons don't work up hill. My tank is on a stand so the only way is to use my 2 dedicated 5g buckets to return the water back to the tank. Help!

buy a python. or get another water pump to pump the water from teh buckets back into the tank. with the python, you can eliminate the buckets altogether.

Whats a python?

A python is a device that hooks up to your faucet (much like a water bead fill device). On one setting it will draw a suction and vacume your tank while putting the water in the sink. Then you change the setting and it will refill the tank from the faucet. Workes well as long as your tank is not a mile from the sink. They are about $40 from what I understand, but they can be built for less.

I am definately in the minority of folks who don't like the python, but in any case, it might be worth buying one from a local store so that you can return it if it doesn't work for you. Despite countless suggestions to make it work, a combination of angle, location and water pressure just made the python work WAY too slow for me.

I would definately give it a shot though, I'm jealous of those who can use theirs with ease :o

hook your python to your garden hose if possible, or you can use it just to refill since thats the hard part anyways. or do what i do when im too lazy to wait forthe python get the garden hoses from the front and backyard and use that to fill up the tank.

If you are going to use it for just filling you can get an adapter from the harware store for a couple of bucks and some hose and it would be a lot cheaper.

Pythons work fine as long as your tank isn't too far from the water source, the longer the hose the less suction you will get. But no matter what, it is a lot easier and less messy to fill the tank back up using the python.

you could always turn the water flow to the sink up. They're usually underneath, and that should up the suction and flow rate. I built my own and I have no problems with it, its worth it in the long run imo. No more bucket running or messes.
