I plan on putting a medium sized refugium on the back of my 30 gallon. It's 19" and I'll position it about in the middle. I plan on have 30 pounds of southdown (whenever I can find the **** stuff) in there. My question is, I figure with 30 pounds in there covering the bottom 4 inches, with another 8" to go to the top, that's maybe another 30 lbs of water or so, will the tank of my back be able to support that? I know that they sell these things, and that all the filters on the back must weight something, but 60+ pounds is alot of weight. Any comments? Thanks

I dont know, sounds kinda risky...If it was in pure compression, meaning that the force was applied directly downwards on the glass, i might think it would hold. But since the center of gravity of the refugium is a couple inches back, it will create a lot of torque on that glass, and might cause some problems. Can you prop the bottom up, to take a little of the wieght off of the tank?

I'm with sauceman. I'd figure out a way to support the bottom of the fuge a bit, take some of the weight off of the tank. Maybe you could setup something that attached to the canopy? I know we don't have much room on the back of out tanks, but we could always rig up a platform that attached to the back of the stand and the back of the canopy if need be.

I'll try and figure out something. Why would they sell something that couldn't take the weight? Perhaps I'm just reading the descriptions wrong. Does anyone have one?
