What the bleep was at the bottom of my tank?

I just did a parasite treatment and found a small, slimy, globby white ball-like thing that I've never seen before just sitting at the bottom of my tank. It had like a slimy opaque membrane around it too. Yuck. I got rid of it, but (call it morbid fascination) I just can't help but wonder - Has anyone had that happen before and does anyone know what it is?

it may have been a leftover food pellet or clump of flakes. i've seen it happen before, gets covered by a fungus membrane and stuck down in the gravel. pretty gross.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like. I see it more on new tanks. I think it's because the saprophitic bacteria and microorganisms have not become established, so the only thing to break down uneaten food is fungi. Eventually it goes away.

Not missing any fish are you??!?!

i get something like that sometimes, i think my arowana throws it up kinda like an owl's pellet.

lol, Holly - Luckily, no - Fish are accounted for. Geez, I have never had that happen with my food, but maybe the parasite medication did something so that it made that little piece of food look like an alien pod. Well, thanks for your feedback. At first I thought it was some kind of parasite life form that had been thrown up or otherwise eliminated from the fishies somehow. Think that's possible? It was creepy like that.
