I posted a used video for sale on Ebay.
It sold and I was paypaled $5.14 ($1 for the video and $4.14 for the shipping and insurance charges).

Here is where Ebay sticks it to the sellers.

This is what the $1 sale cost me in fees.

$0.35 listing fee
$0.35 photo fee
$0.05 selling fee

Total fees = $0.75

I made $0.25 on the sale.

Now paypal (which Ebay owns) also charged me 3% on the payment.

That is another $0.16

Now I have to pay $4.14 to ship it.

So total sale is $5.14 minus $0.75 in Ebay fees, minus $0.16 in paypal fees, minus $4.14 in shipping costs leaves me with a grand total of $0.09!

What a way to screw a seller. Now I know why so many sellers that had Ebay stores say that the site rips them off.

It's better to just have a tag sale.

They get you coming and going.

Hopefully the buyer will enjoy the Elmopalooza video with her kids but man, I could have sold it for a quarter at a tag sale and made more money and not given so much to the greedy corporation known as Ebay.

I hear ya. I tried selling items on ebay before... but I always take into account the cost of listing the item. I just add that to the price and the buyer has to eat it. I know that the price will be higher than it normally would but there are so many people out there that believe ebay is cheaper. I've seen items that I can get at a local store or even an internet store go for more money on ebay and people don't even flinch.

I do a lot of stuff on ebay and I am pretty happy with it. I usually add the ebay charges to the shipping price and haven't had any problems with it yet. I have noticed that most people tend to not pay much attention to the shipping until after they win the item. It isn't the most honest way to go about things, but it's the way it works. Also if you are going to sell something, don't sell small things because as Swreefer pointed out you don't make much!!! Just my 2 cents!

I've bought and sold on ebay. It does amaze me that people will pay more than what things are going for elsewhere. For example, Big Al's is selling the Filstar XP 3 filter for $89, and it's going on ebay anywhere from $98 to $115. I always look at shipping costs, and weigh the cost of the item +shipping, vs the cost of a local item + tax.
On the other hand, I can buy birkenstocks off ebay..from Germany...and even paying the shipping come out better than going into a local store and buying them, if they even had the style I want in the size I want. I gotta buy 2 pair to make it work...this one guy will ship 2 pair for the same price....but hey, I'll suffer!
Other things, like antiques and collectibles are entirely subjective: how bad do you want it, and what are you willing to pay :D There are some things I'm quite willing to pay for, others, you just look and go "Oh wow" as the bids soar..

I ALWAYS look at the shipping price AND the payments accepted section...since I do "NOT" ever do paypal.....only personal check or money order....and I figure in the shipping and check elswhere to see if all added up it's a better deal or not. So far I haven't had any trouble with purchasing things on ebay...accept for the issue I had with UPS in damaging an item I shipped through them. I have yet to try selling anything on ebay though...this gives me pause to do so without checking thouroughly into it first...

Thanks for the heads up SW !! ;)

We are fish people we always check EVERYTHING! Our hobby demands we be on top of it all. Others don't think like us. Another way people try to get you(I don't do this by the way) is they tell you the s&h charges AFTER you bid. I am always careful to ask them what they are charging before buying it, but as stated before many people aren't that thorough. I have gotten some AWSOME deals on Ebay, but there are some things that can be purchased cheaper elsewhere. My advise to anyone who plans to buy something, is to check it out on other online sites like Big Al's and then make sure you pay less than their price, and if it goes over don't bid!
