I have a coarse sand type substrate that is 4 to 5 inches deep, its almost impossible to gravel vac it. My question is this. Does this harbour any problems where water quality is concerned?

Deadly gases will build up in the substrate if you don't stir/move/vacuum it regularly. These gas won't be deadly when they are trapped in the substrate, but once you stir them up they could potentially kill your fish.

Two ways to avoid this would be get malaysian trumpet snails that will dig in the sand, or stir it with a stick or something about once a month. Live plants will also prevent this with their roots.

Rule of thumb is never to exceed more than 1 1/2 inches in depth if you are using sand as a substrate.

Snails that dig their way deep in gravel or sand must be checked often since a dead buried one may be overlooked and will cause colapse when it starts decomposing.

Keeping such deep layer of sand is not good. If posible, try ta take out some, vaccum the surface regularly and stir it once in a while to let small amounts of gas leave to the surface.

With sand, deep vaccuming is not really necesary since the debris will not penetrate it, but stay on top. Keepin a regular cleaning routine will keep you out of trouble.
