Just got a quote for an acrylic panal 20' * 7' , with a thickness of 5 and 1/2 inches, and it was expensive . I asked the company what thickness was needed for 12,000g tank and they recomended the above. I am thinking that the thickness is going a little over board. Anyone know how to find the thickness of a panel on this size tank?

try to contact Chad from Aquatic predators, he is currently working on a few monster tanks ranging from 2000-10000g.
Hes admin so he shouldn't be too hard to find,

Just for fun, the weight of the panel itself is 3700lbs, that should be fun putting that into the tank. :thm:

Ok Just another question. Does anyone know a company that deals in this size of acrylic in the US? I think it would be cheaper to buy in the US and have it shipped. Considering that the price given to me was $90,000 US.
Sigh.... Japan is expensive.

That price doesnt sound very ridiculous to me actually. That is a massive piece of acrylic.
Using acrylite GP specs, it would need to be about 5" thick. So they didnt really add on anything there. Here is the link- http://cyro.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/cyro.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=133
There is a nice excel sheet to do all the work for you.
I would talk to cyro (makers of acrylite GP) for a price quote- http://www.cyro.com/Internet/SiteContent.nsf/GP2004!OpenPage
Is it going to be a single run without vertical reinforcement? Could you gain thickness savings by adding vertical supports at the 5, 10 & 15 foot intervals?

If you dropped it down to 6' by 20' you would only need 4" thick acrylic. (id go with 4 1/4") that should be a pretty substantial savings.

I really don't want to do that if I can. I want to go for one really big veiwing window.

Thanks for the site Slipknottin, I am going to give them an e-mail today. And bringing the size down to 6' is a good thought. I suppose I am goig to have to do some research.

Just some thoughts...I know that at the Shedd Aquarium in chicago they had 5" thick panes with some hugeee tanks...I don't know if that was glass or acrylic, but I imagine glass. I think 6" should be fine. Good luck Dave and, as I'm sure you will, keep us posted.

I hope that it goes without saying that there will be a very detailed and in-depth photo journal of this new tank coming together, from foundation to filtration. Right? ;)
Much luck with it.

That is correct. But everyone will have to wait for a year or so before construction starts, while everything is being sorted out and prepared. ;)
