i want to upgrade my filter to penguin bio-wheel - either 200 or 350 for my tank (it is a 20 gallon long and will upgrade to a bigger tank later on) which has guppies, apple snails, ramhorn snails, and live plants. i might add eco-complete gravel to my tank soon.. so, i need to figure out what can i make the penguin bio-wheel work without carbon because i don't like actived carbon. is there anything else i can use instead of carbon? i'm currently using a tetra whisper 20 and i hate it with a passion. so, i need to figure out quick before it ruin my tank.

Hrm, well, I slit the top end of a dry cartridge and dumped the carbon out :)

Been using that one for a month now and it's not falling part yet.

My other ones have carbon in, but they've been in the tanks for quite a while. The carbon is deactivated and they're still good, so I'm not going to change them until they get to the point that they start showing wear and tear.

you dont need the carbon just take it out as mentioned.

Buy an Aquaclear sponge that will come close to fitting and then cut it to fit. Chuck the Whisper filter and replace with the sponge. It will last forever and is easier to clean.
