ok, I understand that in order to get the water back in you have to have whatever you vac it into above your aquarium. My question though, when returning that water, how do you keep from sucking all of the stuff you took out of the aquarium back into it with the water??

Most of the time when ppl vaccume there water they just throw out the old water and put in fresh water. This takes care of your water change and gravel vaccum at the same time. Happy Fishkeeping!!

out with the old in with the new

You throw out the old nasty water, house plants love it. Use a bucket or potable water safe hose (from RV dept at Walmart) or long vinyl hose to put water back into the tank, you will need an adapter to attach hose to your sink faucet. Watch the temp carefully.

Some of the gunk you vacuum out is too small to be seen, and some nasties are disolved in the water itself, therefore you want to replace with fresh water, not just put the old water back in :)

hmm

in that case, can't I just fill the five gallon bucket to the level of water that I took out and poor it back in. This is with a 10 gallon tank so no real problem.

However, do I put the Stress coat in the whole tank or in the bucket before I put it into the aquarium?

Since you will be using a bucket to refill I would just add the dechlorinator (whatever brand it happens to be) right to the bucket.

Dump the nasty water, take the bucket to the tub and fill to the level you took out, check temp with thermometer. Add dechlorinator for that volume. Carefully pour it back in the tank, you may need to break the force of the flow with your hand to keep from stirring up gravel and hurting fish.

Holly is right. Get rid of that old water. (Dump it on your flowers) I keep gallon jugs of treated water squirreled away under the kitchen table so that I know their temperature is near that of the tank. With a ten gallon tank I find that dumping water from a bucket disturbs the substrate (and the fish) so I first decant the jug water into a large pitcher before pouring it across an angled surface (I use the clean lid of a cat food can} to disburse it gently into the tank. Many here recommend first adding new water straight from the tap and then the dechlorinator/pH regulator. I am too timid to try this.

Yeah get rid of the old water DUMP IT. then put some dechlorinator into the bucket and then fill it up with water thats the right temperature then put it in the tank. If you want to check if the temperature is right without a thermometer just use your finger and dip it into the tank and then into the bucket to see if its more or less the same. If its pretty close and you can't tell it should be close enough.
