I am getting a new 65 gallon tank in a week or so and am wondering about conditions for plants. For starters, the tank is 24 inches high, which I know is typically to high for plants. In addition, I will probably be looking at about 1/2 watt per gallon and don't plan on adding CO2

Are there any plants that will do okay in these conditions? I would like to have a mixture of fake plants with some live ones, but I'm not sure if anything will work in this. I am trying to figure this out before I decide on the substrate. Thanks.

You are probably going to want to look at Java Fern, Java Moss, Anubias, and possibly some Cryptocorynes. You also might be able to grow an Amazon Sword but with limited success. I have kept an Amazon Sword alive at .5 wpg but my tank wasn't as deep as yours. As far a substrate goes, the Java Fern, Java Moss, and Anubias should all be attached to driftwood, rocks, or things of that nature so substrate shouldn't be a concern. HTH ;)

Floating water sprite and most floating plants do well.
If you plan on a plant tank, you'll want more light than .5w/gal CO2 or not.
1.5-2w/gal is good for most non CO2 tanks.
Floating plants have no trouble since they can get CO2 from the air and the light is right on top of them. Most submersed plants will just sit there and likely rot away after some time. That's "okay" for some folks but if you want things to grow you'll need more light.

I agree with Tom, thats too low light for most any plant underwater
