I've got 8 black neons, 7 rummy noses, 4 cories, and a betta in a 29 gallon tank. I noticed one day that one eye of two black neons was missing. I didn't see any signs of disease or anything. What is a valid explanation for this? I thought maybe it was the betta or something but the betta gets PLENTY to eat(darn thing looks constipated).

Even if the betta is full, it's still aggressive. I would suspect the betta as well. I had a nice blue/green betta in with some cardinals and one of the cardinals is now missing an eye, so I removed the betta, and like magic the roughed up looking cardinals are fine now.

Poor water quality can cause lots of problems, or lead to problems. Whenever something isn't right, it is always good to check all your levels and make sure nothing is out of wack. Sometimes a process of elimination is easier than pinpointing the cause
I had a female betta eat the eyes out of one rasbora and then went on to take one out of a neon tetra. One eyed jack survived the experience and gets along just fine with one eye. I would definately suggest the betta is the aggresser
