I would like to change one of my 3 Penguin 330 filters to a
canister.

Which is easier to setup and maintain ? Fluval 304 or Filstar XP2?

Filstar - best option of what you mentioned. :)

I have both a Filstar and a couple of Fluval's. I would go with the Filstar. A xp-2 would work fine, but if I had the extra money I would go with the xp-3.

XP2 and XP3 owners.....

What combination to you use to load the the XP2 or XP3 media
baskets?

Based on the replies so far, I am leaning to the Filstar's

Many thanks,

I also have the best tank in the world ;). I would suggest getting an XP 3 and keeping one of the Penguins, or you can do what I did and get 2 Emperor 400s. They are awesome, they pick up so much crap, it's amazing.

Many thanks,
Daniel I'm using filter floss and ceramic bio-balls, with a small amount of peat pellets placed in a re-useable filter pouch. And sponges. No charcoal..

I use the sponges that came with it, filter floss, ceramic noodles, and bio balls.

I agree with NJF on how much gunk it picks up. I was amazed.

The LFS does not carry Filstars....I will have to look for them..

They carry Fluvals, Eheim Eccos and new Penn Plax Cascade
canisters. They had a bid display of the Cascade filters..

Has anyone used them before or know anything of them ? They
were BIG canisters.

I have all three sizes of the Eccos and find them to be very good pumps. For a 72 you would definately want the 2235. I would also suggest a powerhead with filter or a HOB to help with water circulation. You might want to check the prices for them at bigalsonline.com before you buy them locally. As for media, the sponges that come with them work fine and you can use quilt batting for the floss in the top basket.

You should order all of your equipment from Big Al's Online (http://www.bigalsonline.com). You will not find any place with cheaper prices. Even if you do, you just let them know about it and they will beat that price by 5%.

If you are a fan of the shop, and money isn't a tremendous issue, ask them if they can order Filstars from their supplier. It might cost you some more (I know my LFS is alot more expensive than mailorder) but try and sponsor them and keep them in buisness if you can afford it.
