The screen covers that accompany some tanks work great.

Old windows work fantastic .You can hinge them like in the photo.
I never forget to close the tank this way.They're aluminum and don't rust.It also gives me a nice workspace on top of the tank.

Even Rubbermaid tops work if weighted down.

An old 1/4" panel from an old aquarium works fantastic,also.

No picture but I have egg crate ceiling tile on the top of my 29 gallon tank. It helps me keep the heat down but keeps most stuff out.

I use egg crate, and am now going to add a Foreman grill.

If I have an old tank I want a panel of to make a lid, how do I go about removing the panel? Will a knife cut the sealant glue stuff?
