View Full Version : Will a Hang-On Skimmer and Refugium Break my tank?

I have a Bak-Pak 2 Protein Skimmer by CPR, and it's pretty big...
I just ordered a hang on refugium from CPR as well...
Both of those will hang on my 20 gallon saltwater (turning reef) tank, and they will take up the entire back of the aquarium. With this much weight hanging on the tank, is the tank likely to break.

PS: because I'm almost certain Mogurnda will help me out with this (he always answers my threads), I would like to say that this is a different question than the one you answered on my skimmer (I'm adding the fuge now). Just wanted to let you know that I'm not asking the same question twice :duh: !

you can always put supports from the stand up to the bottom of the skimmer and refugium. this way the weight is not on the glass so much, it is risky though if u want to have that much on the glass, it could very well break. do something about it.

I agree, thats alot of weight to bare on thin glass. Add some support under them so that they dont even touch the rim or the tank. and the lip will keep them from falling backward...

As long as you don't mind that I give the same answer, keep on asking :D

I guess I trust the glass more than you guys do. I used a bakpak and an HOB fuge on my 20 for a few years, seemed fine. Right now I'm using a 24" HOB fug on a Perfecto 30 XTall, which is essentially a very tall 20 gallon made by a cheap manufacturer. Seems plenty stable, but who knows.

I can't argue with the idea of making a little stand for the fuge and/or skimmer. It would give peace of mind.

Here's one more idea. Go to the CPR website and check the FAQs or email them. They have always been helpful to me.

I had an AC500 HOB refugium with a small light fixture sitting on top on the back of a 10 gallon for a month with no problems. The AC spanned nearly the entire length of the tank and was a good percentage of the tank's volume as well.
