I am about to go to my local petsmart to get a test kit for my water, so I can monitor it. What do you suggest I get?

aquapharmasueticals master test kit with ammonia, pH, nitrite, and nitrate. Might seem expensive, but it lasts forever...I have had mine a little over a year and it shows no signs of needing to be replaced. I don't think I'd ever get any other brand again.
Test strips aren't that reliable. Plus if you want to only test one thing, you waste a whole strip.

I've personally never bought nitrate or nitrite test kits. Ammonia and ph are the only ones I ever used. But, if you plan on keeping live plants in your tank then you would want the nitrite and nitrate test kits. As for the test strips I've only used them to test my water hardness.
I would recommend to anybody wanting to test their water, the bare minimum is Ammonia (NH3,4), Nitrite (NO2) and PH. Remember, Nitrite is still quite toxic to fish and you can have Nitrite without Ammonia (cycling).
Now if you really want to monitor the water, tests for KH, GH and Nitrate (NO3) are good.
I use AquariumPharicuticals as well as Nutrafin and RedSea with very minimal issues.

Anyway great kit. Just replaced my nitrate solutions after about a year's use. The hardness tests are simple as well.
