what species of plecos only grow about 10-14 inches long?

Common, Lepord, lemmonhead, a few others.

Don't commons get up to 2 feet long?

Zebra plecos get only 4 inches long, Royal plecos get 10 inches long I believe.

yeah, commons get about 18-20 inches.

i want something i could keep in a 100 gallon with an Oscar (someday...i hope....)

gah! so many! o.O and i bet most of them are impossible to find for an aquarium, or if they are, they're uber expensive. i think i'll probably go with a chocolate pleco. they get about 8 inches, which is a decent size to put up with an oscar.

Go with a Vampire Pleco. They don't get much bigger than 10"-12" tops.

Not my personal experience, but I have a friend who keeps an Oscar and a Pleco... Thats A TON of waste in the tank. Both fish are notoriously powerful poopers and messy eaters. I call his tank the "toilet".

That said... my dream tank would have Oscars and Giant Whiptail Catfish.

I know someone that has oscars, they diddnt poo that much, gravel vaced every week other then that it was fine, they had a common plec that was fully grown, other then a thumping sound when it stuck to the glass it was fine, though I wish I could still see the tank, sadly we moved..

be careful with the chocolate. I rescued one from the lfs (they had rescued him from a very crappy keeper of fish) a few years ago and gave him to my son.

He was about 8" at the time.

He is about 16" right now--maybe a little longer.

The chocolate is in a 125 gallon tank (6' long).

A catfish I really enjoy--though not technically a pleco--is the Royal Farlowella. He gets to about 8" SL. Here are links to a couple of photos he graciously posed for.

Good Luck finding what you like. Have you ever considered maybe getting a few plecos that are a bit smaller rather than a single bigger one. There are so many cool looking ones that rather than having a big, floppy behemouth you have several colorful conversation stoppers.

Work with your lfs to custom order fish for you. Many of them will do that for their customers. Another thought is Jeff Rapps. He is a very reputable seller. Sells to hobbyists and stores. www.tangleduponcichlids.com
