Approx. 60 - 70lbs. will give you about 1.5" in front and 3.5 - 4.0" in the back.

A great substrate for a planted tank is 100% Flourite. An almost as great substrate IMO, and more cost effective, would be 45lbs. of Flourite and 20 - 25lbs. of the cheapie beige colored gravel (very similar in size to Flourite) that practically every LFS carries.

I have had excellent results with Flourite(don't like the red, I use the brown), but there are probably a bunch of people who will respond with good things to say about Onyx sand as well.
It's really a matter of personal taste.

I agree with Len and like the normal flourite. Most of the time I mix with normal gravel to save costs. I also aquascape like Len does (I am a copycat) and I like the way it looks. But that is personal preference.

I am going to eventually try my hand at Onyx sand because I want to start a planted tank with certain fish that need (or prefer) sand like material.

Another option is EcoComplete. Never tried it but some ppl like it.

Just my $0.02

Check out Profile (Shultz's Aquatic Soil) at Home Depot. It's only 5 USD a 10 pound bag. I mix that with the Flourite.
