Hey guys, I keep fresh, so i don't visit this side of the halocline that often, but I had to share this story.
I work in a pretty big lfs that sell only fish. Last customers of the night were a couple of rednecks that obviously had no experience keeping fish (well the guy probably kept an oscar in a 55 at some point, but that's pretty standard). They were asking alot of questions like: "Can we just use softener salt?" and "Do we NEED to use salt?" and "Should we use soap when we clean the tank?". I was a little confused untill I got the full story. They had bought a fully established 55g saltwater set up for $50 from a guy that needed money to get his kids presents out of layaway. From what I could gather, it included a protien skimmer, power compact lighting, around $500 of liverock, and several corals (one that was supposedly as big as your head).
Here's the kicker. They brought all this stuff home, filled the tank with TAP WATER, and put in all the rock and corals. Only THEN did they decide to come to the store, and purchase salt mix. The worste part, was that even after I delicatley explained that they had just killed $500 of live rock, and another $500 dollars in corals, they weren't even that upset. What a waste. They left to try another store to see if they could save a couple bucks on the salt.
