Hey all, I have my 10g cycling and would say it's about half way through; ammonia is near zero, nitrites are off the chart. I just wanted to make sure what's happening is completely normal.

First, I bought precured liverock, but due to a fiasco with the website I bought it from, it sat out on my porch in the cold and most of it died, so my tank is going through a major cycle.

Next, I have this nearly neon red algae covering everything except for a few spots on the sand that has this light green algae. I have to scrape my glass 4-5 times a day because the red algae is growing so fast. I just wanted to make sure that all of this is completely normal and that the red algae will subside when the tank cycles and I can get a good cleanup crew in.

TIA

Hmm, must be it's not normal.

Assuming that you do not have anything in there yet, this is normal till your water quality will settle. I would suggest a water change as well. Are you running your lights currently? What lighting do you have?

Sounds like cyanobacteria? I would not worry about it since it might subside when your cycle finishes.... with saltwater it takes a little longer for everything to 'stabalize'. Wait till your cycle is done and see if its still really bad.

Can you keep your lights off during this cycle period? Adding some macro algae might also help keep 'bad' algae subsided.

That sucks about your liverock... can you grab some seeded bacteria from any saltwater filters?

Yep, it sounds like cyano. Just went through a nasty bloom in my SW planted tank. It's pretty normal in a new tank, especially if you have a big nutrient load from dying live rock.

Increasing circulation helps a lot, as does skimming. Once the tank is cycled and settled, it will die down.

I have some LR that I bought from the LFS so hopefully it will eventually seed the other LR.

I am leaving the lights on, mainly it was in trying to keep the coraline algae that was on the LR alive, but I think it's died anyway.

The bloom is starting to subside, probably do to my cycle seems to be nearing completely :D. Now that it started, it's going quick. I have 0 ammonia and .25 nitrite left. I'll post some pictures later, but the people over ar NR said it was cyano too.

Thanks for the help :).
