Where should I stick my airstone?

I didn't anticipate getting a pump and an airstone with my used 29g tank purchase, but I got one. :) Should I stick it at the bottom to help aerate the tank (I have an AC70 filter) or should I bury it in the bottom of the media box to help aerate the bio media? The stone itself is approx 3-4 inches long, but I could get a different one. I'm not sure who makes the pump, but it looks old. :)

lol...
Personally, I'd 'stick' it in the cabinet/stand and save it for emergencies or what have ya.

Seems like it's way too noisy for the benefit it may give me. I'm guessing the benefits are more oxygen in the water, but how much am I going to need that? I'm not running a planted tank, so I figure I might need it more than others, but is it really necessary for proper aeration?

I run airstones in my tanks for a few hours every night to eliminate any surface scum from building up. If I didn't do this I'd get a thin layer of surface scum (which is quite ugly) that IMO makes my lighting less effective for my plants.

In your case, I don't think you need to run it at all if you already have some surface aggitation.

So that is what it is... here i am upping the time i change the water (even though tests came out within norms) shortened the light time, and finally resorted to skimming the top of the water myself. It is nice to know that lack of surface aggitation is doing this and now i can fix it! Thanks!!!
