Which is more effective at trapping debris and waste in
a canister ?

I would go with floss...in my personal experience. Sponges are great bio-media, but floss seems to work better for mechanical.
I use nothing but sponges. Sponges are permanent, or effectively so, and floss is replaced each time. Too much replacement and throw-away for me to bother with floss. Packing density also affects the capture of floss, so is another variable. The capture of sponges is determined by their porosity at manufacture (and by the maintenance, rinsing, but that applies to floss also).
Personal choice item really.

DLeung10,
Are you still planning on using a cannister? If so you can use both. I use the sponges that came with my canisters and put floss after them. Then put the rest of your media.

I use both.. The floss traps the finer debris. Floss should be changed out with each cleaning. I also rinse the sponge filter material with each cleaning.
