Hi all, I am just wondering what everyone thinks the pro's and con's of acrylic vs glass aquariums? Just thought I would see what everyones opinions are! :read:

glass, nice because its cheap and hard to scratch

acrylic is nice because it looks better than glass, lighter and will last a lot longer than a glass because there are no silicone seams to fail. they also insulate better than glass tanks. only cons are that they scratch real easy and they cost more. for the safety and ease of moving issues i go with acrylic for everything thats over 60 gallons. and thats probably only because i get new glass 60s for 40-60 dollars depending on the store i have time to get to.

I've only had one acrylic tank, a 5g Aquatech. While it was lightweight, convenient, and looked very nice, I discovered even the most minute scratch would attract green spot algae & be very difficult to clean.

The acrylic tank has been replaced by a glass one, and I've no regrets.

Just my personal experiences and your mileage may vary :joe:

I am just getting back into the hobby after about ten years without any tanks. However, for the previous 15 yrs, we had as many as 40 tanks going at the same time, acrylic and glass. Glass is great on price and being scratch free, but the leaks happen sooner or later as does the unexpected crack/breakage. (especially with grandkids) Acrylic is more expensive, but with what I feel is a better appearance, lightweight, easy to move, and when you look at it wrong it scratches. When cleaning on the inside, I use pre-washed chami cloths or regular washcloth for those scratches that grew algae.
