hey guys,

My light strip has a standard flourescent bulb that came with it. I came across 2 different bulbs and I'm wondering which would work better for growing my plants.

GE "plant and aquarium bulb" (says nothing about the color temp.)

GE "sunlight bulb"(i think) (5000k color temp.)

I dunno if this is enough info but if not just tell me what you need to know.

thanks!

The GE plant & aquarium bulb will have a pink hue to it and won't be as bright as the other.

The 5000k bulb is mostly white with a slight yellowish tint to it.

6,500k "daylight" bulb will be whiter than the 5000k one with less yellow.

Most people prefer the whiter daylight bulbs, but the plants won't care so buy what looks good to you.

i actually have the GE plant and aquarium bulb and it looks much more yelow to me. well, it looks normal now, but when i first put it in, it was much more yellow than my old bulb.

isn't there a range of color temps that is best suited to growing plants?

6500K is optimal for plant growth, because it is a full-spectrum bulb. It doesn't just work for aquarium plants either, it works exceptionally well for growing indoor plants.

alright then that's what i'll look for. Maybe lowes would have one?

If you can't find 6500Ks the 5000K bulb you were looking at will do an adequate job for you.
Actually anything between 2000 and 10000K will grow plants. The difference is in the eye of the hobbiest. 2000Ks look yellow/green, 10000Ks look stark white and 6500 - 6700Ks are considered daylight bulbs (a middle ground), but more difficult to find in the Lowes/Home Depots in the shoplight format.
5000Ks will work fine for you.

alright then, if I can't find anything higher i'll get the 5000k bulb

thanks
