I guess that I have to keep my three 5" Guramis and my 6" red tail shark together in my 45 gallon tank with a large pleco, but that leaves a lot space for just five fish. Are there any fish that can colour my aquarium and yet survive the tank? I've tried smaller Guramis and many tiger barbs because they school and look cool but they don't last very long. Any suggestions?

what about giant danios? you could add 5...maybe 6 that way they'll form a school some times...but not constantly

What are your water parameters? If the barbs didn't make it I'd suspect your water quality is down. Large gouramis and the others are oftem more tolerant in my experience. The fish you have are creating quite a lot of waste, depending on your filtration and maintenance routine you may very well be maxed-out already.
