i just realized this plant looks identical to the plants that commonly grow all over my backyard. they are also abundant around the salt marsh areas behind my house. could this be the same plant? i plan on collecting a small amount and setting up a 5 gal in indirect sun to see if it will grow submersed.

Prob yes

There are a few varieties of marselea, the aquatic four leaved clover. Some do Ok in dry ground. The one that makes the best ground cover in a tank is not the same as the one that you buy in a pond store, typically. I can't say what of the maybe 4 types you may have at home.
