Hello, I'm somewhat new to fish. When I was 7 my father showed me how to raise Oscars. I love oscars but a 29g tank is a far cry from the 125g tank we used for those. So 19 years later I have a tank given to me for christmas. I have it all up and running, 4 days now. Everything is going well and would like to have some fish in by the end of the week. I don't know what works well with what. I would like some active colorful fish to go in this tank. What is everyones opinion and a complete fish set up for this tank? I'd like some suggestions.
Thank you,
Alfredo
Read the cycling article under the articles section of this forum and after reading that decide if you still want fish this week.

Have you tested your water parameters yet?
It's the only way to know if you truly cycled.

Well I think I have a pretty colorfull and entertaining 29 gallon so I'll let you know what I have.
1 flame dwarf gourami
1 blue dwarf gourami
1 blue ram (planning on getting a second)
8 white clouds
2 otos
And planning on getting some ammano and cherry shrimp
The dwarf gouramis are very very colorful but not the most active fish. The blue ram is colorful not as much as the gouramis but is very active. The white clouds(schooling fish) are very active and have nice color but does not take away from the bigger fish. The ottos are interesting to watch and clean algea the shrimp will be for cleaning the gravel and algea.
Hope this helps and you can see pics in my signature.

Here is the fish for my planned 29G.
Trio of Apistogramma's
8 Lemon Tetras
6-8 Pencil Fish
After you read the cycling article....here's some suggestions....stock slowly, don't get them all at once....
In my planted 29 I have:
2-koi/marble angelfish
1-pair of german blue rams
5-prestella tetra
1-otocinlus
I'm also considering picking up a striped kuhlii loach to add as well..but that's about it for this tank.
It's a pretty active and colorful tank. There are many types and colors of angels to choose from..I have a thing for "calico" type colors, that's why I picked the kois.........but make sure they are a pair...and don't get more than 2 for a 29. (watch them at the lfs for a good while and pick out two that hang together) Also, get them small, that way they'll adjust and get used to the other fish in your tank before they get big enough to try and eat them...lol. AND.......add the angels in last!
I like a setup that has a group of smaller schooling type fish...a couple of larger "show" fish along with some that will hang near the bottom...my rams and the kuhlii (if I get one) will fill that nitch.
You could choose 1 or 2 of the larger gourami as your show fish (not sure how the larger gourami get along with each other though, maybe only one of those in a 29)......and some smaller compatable tetras as your schoolers ...and a nice shoal of 6 or so smaller cories...pandas are nice...as your bottom fish. Make sure they aren't cories that get very large.
What you aught to do is pick a type of fish that you really like, that is compatable in a 29 size tank. And then go from there...picking fish that will get along with your favorite choice...that inhabit different areaa of the tank.
Make sure you do some research into each one before you make your decision. Have fun ! :D
