Im back at college and I brought some of my fish back with me, the others stayed at home because my dad decided he wanted to get back into fish keeping which is fine by me because he paid me for them and I get to try something different in my tank now!! Oh the possibilities are endless and I am so excited. :bday:

So here is the deal. I have a 20 gallon tank that has eco-complete and black sand in it, is moderately planted, and has driftwood in it. Its residents are as follows;

1 zig zag eel which will reach a max size of 7 inches
1 male betta
1 oto
1 clown loach

I would like to add some more fish because as of right now its pretty much a bottom heavy tank. The betta can be moved to a different tank, I have a 5 gallon that can house it.

In the past I have had dwarf gouramis, neon tetras, black phantom tetras, and cory cats. I would like to try something new. I was thinking about some loaches because from what I understand they will play in the sand but they are also bottom dwellers. Any suggestions?

Is the last fish a Clown Loach (your post) or a Clown Pleco (in your sig)?

I would go with a school of 6 Cardinal tetras. They are a nice looking fish and will stay to the mid to top of the tank. Also it is a light load on your tank.

sounds like any small schooling fish would fit nicely, i like the cardinals but recommend harlequin rasboras, they love the plants, you might even see them flirt and they are extremely hardy

kuhlii loach are pretty neat little fish. A couple of those might be interesting, though some folks say they never see them because they hide all the time...others have mentioned that they see thiers all the time...

Do you really want more bottom dwellers in there ? Or are you looking for something to inhabit the mid to top range of your tank ? And is this a 20tall or 20long ? Are you sure you want to keep that zig zag eel in that tank ? I think they get pretty big, but I could be mistaken.

hatchetfish will hang up near the top..they like to be in groups though.
rasboras would do nicely I think...I believe they're a mid-level schooling fish.

BTW...good choice on the echo-complete !! ;) My favorite substrate !

Emg I am a little apprehensive about putting more bottom dwellers in my tank but I was thinking about them because they tend to mix up the sand and help keep anaerobic pockets from forming. As for the eel, I've done a bit of research and what I understand is that the zig zag eel is one of the smallest members of the spiney eel family only reaching about 7 inches. The Spiney eels that reach about 3ft are the fire eel and the tire track eel.

The tank is a 20Long and I have to say I wasnt sure about the eco complete but I love the look of it so much better then gravel!

Thanks for the ideas, anymore?

Lol...good on the bottom dwellers, cause I would say you've got plenty of those. What about an african butterfly fish ? They have huge mouths, are carnivorous and spend most of thier time cruising along the top of the tank I believe.....not sure what you could keep in there with them that they wouldn't try to eat...but check them out and see..cool fish and definitely not your average stock.

I have sand in my tanks and don't worry at all about pockets. I swirl it a bit when I do gravel vacs and the cories do a good job of sifting through it on a regular basis.

I wouldn't go with zebra danios...I'd stay away from danios all together..but that's just my opinion. They are WAY too active a fish for me ! Zipping and zinging all over the place constantly...they never STOP !

Well, have fun picking and choosing some tankmates for what you have in there. That's one of the best parts of aquarium keeping ! :D

I just looked up a picture of the African Butterfly fish and it's really neat! Can I keep more then one per the tank? And if I decide to go with a schooling fish, how many do you think my tank would be able to support?
