I am always playing around w/ the media in my Canister Filters and have a pretty good idea what most of it does but still I have not figured out about the ceramic rings mine get very dirty fast and I know they are supposed to be collecting benificial bacteria so do you wash these or not? I am always thinking NO but if they have alot of growth on them is it a good idea to was them or not?

Also mabey others can add the different names of filter media and what they do so people can look it up here

ie

Carbon-Granular activated carbon filter media designed specifically for water purification. Removes dissolved organic compounds that turn the water yellow.

I would rinse the rings in tank water, this removes the debris while maintaining beneficial bacteria.

The rings are also a good low clogging initial filtration stage-catching the big chunks before the finer filtration.
