how many khuli loaches?

With no other fish, I'd put at least 5 kuhlie loaches in a 10 gallon. Be sure to have lots of caves or wood for them to hide under. And have a lid, those guys swim so fast that when they get scared they can jump out of the tank. It'd be easy to do in a 10 gallon I think. Cute fish but they are heck to catch!
 
Yeah. If you are going only for kuhli loaches, you could probably get 7 or 8, but five sounds good with other fish as long as the bio-load doesn't get too high.
 
I know this strays a bit off topic, but I didn't think I needed a whole new thread for this one!

How would you go about cleaning a 10 g tank with 5-6 kuhli loaches. Is there a way of avoiding sucking them up without knowing (i.e. if they are burrowed in the sand)? I was thinking of buying a divider, then twice a week, cleaning one half of the tank with 25-50 % water change (the other half will have all the kuhli loaches in there while I clean... does this make any sense to anyone?

When siphoning I just skim the top of the sand. The waste never settles in it, just sits along the top. Then you would not have to worry about sucking up it buried ones.
 
Healthy fish should be able to avoid a gravel vacuum for the most part. Unless you surprise them and sneak up real quick I guess. Kuhlis are fast and should be able to get away from a gravel vac no problem.
 
Besides, if you have your hand on the end going into the bucket, you can quickly stop the flow of the siphon is one of your fish gets into the vac when it's not suposed to. If they get sucked into your vac's tubing, let them run into your bucket (you ARE using a clean bucket, right?) and then net/siphon them back into the main tank. A little stressful but they'll probably get over it quickly...kinda like a flume ride at Wet'N'Wild.
