I am just wondering if it is normal for my gouramis to gulp air from the surface every now and then. I am aware that they are capable of breathing out of the water but none of my other fish seem to have a problem with the water, meaning I can probably rule out oxygen deprivation. Is there some thing that I could be missing?

Yes, that is perfectly normal behaviour for a gourami to take a gulp of air every now and again. In fact, if your gourami isn't able to make it to the surface to take that gulp of air, it would drown.

Yeah? Thanks for the info. I've noticed that they (I have three in the tank) hit the surface more when one goes after any of the another ones that may wander to close to his "area".

that's not true. gouramis are labrythe fish, or Anabantoids, like Bettas. they have a special organ that allows them to breathe air from the surface, but they also breathe through their gills. they wont drown, but they should have acess to the surface.
