Well it's been a long while since I ventured onto this board. I just had a recent death in my tank, first in almost six months, and I finnally moved the fish in my 10g to my 36. I'm not sure what I had in my sig but my tank stock is one betta (male), 5 white clouds, two neons, three bronze cories and two spotted corries. Well that and the snails... Hate the snails... All of my fish have been in my care for a year give or take afew months. I moved the betta and the two spotted cories in about a week ago after my goramis died. What I'd really like to do is get a dwarf puffer to eat the snails and maybe keep the population from blowing up yet again. It's been abit of a swing over the last year. So is that a good idea? The tank isn't planted I know they prefer that but there are plenty of fakes in there. Are there any other snail eaters that are within the 3 inch adult range that might be better suited to a tank like this. I look at this last fish as a finnal addition to the tank but I still have a ten gallon I can move it to if things go wrong. Anyways I'm always open to ideas please give me any ideas you folks have thankyou.

umm dunno about the puffer. but have you considers loaches. they got my snail population from 1000001 to zip within about a month (3 yoyo loaches in my 30 gallon) there are a few like zebra loaches that are a bit smaller than yoyos (don't get a clown loach... they are pretty and pretty BIG too!). umm kuhli loaches don't take up much space but i don't know about their snail eating powers. btw how big are these snails... the ones i had were tiny... like smaller that the pebbles of my gravel... :/ someone else might know more but look into it. just make sure you get at least 3 if you get loaches :)

The dwarf puffers wouldn't be a good choice for the 36 gallon as they would probably attack the other fish. But why not setup the 10 gallon for them as a species tank, get 4 and some plants and then use the snails in the 36 gallon to feed them. The easiest way would be to place some food like lettuce int he 36 gallon at night, snails will collect on it and then you can place it in the 10 gallon.

It sure is a lot slower than adding a fish right to the 36 gallon but it will help from overpopulating your bigger tank with loaches (which do best in groups) and allow you to keep the fish you want while still be able to produce live food easily.

You might want to try a black shark for snail control. The can be very aggressive, but mine has never hurt any of the other fish. George, my black shark, chases the other fish around a little but has never nipped a fin or hurt any of his tank mates. I tried putting 2 snails in with him, but he flipped them over and had a feast. I then got a plant from my LFS that had tons of baby snails on it. He munched them down, shell and all, in a day. I have one snail in the tank now. The snail is to small for him to flip and eat and the shell is to hard for him to munch through. As soon as that snail gets big enough, I’m sure George will help himself to some escargot.
