Got a Deal But Have Fish Tank Stand Question

I just bought a used 80 gallon fish tank w/ the stand, canopy, lights, filters & heater for $50. What a deal.

The dimensions are 48" W x 18" D x 23" H.

Though the stand is only 13.5" D. The guy said he bought the complete setup from PetSmart 6 years ago & this is the stand they sold him. I could not believe it. He has not had any problems but I hate the idea that the back 4" of the tank hang off the stand. Do you think this is safe? Has anyone heard of a tank / stand purchase like this before?

Not quite sure what to do. I am trying to find another stand or maybe even build one.

Totally unsafe...Do not do it. Petsmart has a stand for 75/80 gallon tanks, it is 19.5" deep and length to safely accomodate your tank. I picked up the same stand for $129 about 3 weeks ago.

ditto

Don't put an 80g tank on a stand made for a 55g.

Great deal, I wish I could find something like that, but I wouldn't even think about using that stand with that tank. That tank will probably weigh over 800 lbs when full.

Personally I would get the stand for that tank and then say to myself, "well, I don't want the other stand to go to waste, guess I'll have to get another tank too." :D

Not only is the stand more likely to tip over, but the tank itself is stressed by not having the bottom frame completely supported. You asking for breakage or at least leaks.

After getting yourself a good stand, fill it with water and watch it for a few days before you add fish and decorations to make sure it doesn't leak.

Thanks for the quick response.

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to get a stand?

JHJ metioned PetSmart. Any other suggestions?

Does anyone have some good DIY plans to build one?

I would also make a custom stand.

BTW you stole that tank!

I think a leak check asap is in order... since its been on a stand that wasn't made for it... for possibly a long time.

Yeah - I put the tank in my garage for now. I was going to fill it up tonight and let it sit for least a week to check for leaks.

Any local fish store should be able to order you a stand. In the meantime (before you order one), you've got a week to see if its going to leak.
