THE FOLLOWING IS BACKGROUND INFO AND IS A OPTIONAL READ :)

A new LFS open near my house and I've been keeping my eye on how well he takes care of his tanks. Well he does so now theres finally a LFS near me that can keep fish alive  He has some really cool tanks setup! So after talking with him I've decided that I'm going to setup a nano reef. I've have had a FW tank for almost 3 years, so I think I know the basics....I think..... :)

THIS IS THE IMPARTANT PART

So to cycle this 10gl nanoreef all I need right now is:
Live Rock................ (1-2lbs per gl) 10-20lbs of live rock?
Live Sand................Enough so I have an inch deep
Filter......................LFS guy said a HOB would work fine
Salt Water (duh)......LFS sells its for $0.50 gl

So this is what I'm going for:
Rinse the live rock in some salt water
Then stack it in the tank and make it pretty
Then add the sand
Then water
Hang the Filter and wait.

Is the filter used only to move the water not filtering?
I'm I missing anything?
Do have anything wrong?
Thanks

For NANO's generally you only run powerheads for circulation and the LR and LS will provide nitrifying bacteria, then weekly water changes of atleast 50% need to happen to remove crud and to keep nitrates low. What type of filter is this guy trying to sell you, if it is for biological or mechanical filtration forget it, there is no point.

I still skim my nano, call me crazy but I feel 50% water changes every week is pretty drastic. It allows me to keep it around 25% and if a snail or somthing dies I have a little ammonia reduction. If the rock is uncured, I'll scrub most of the sponge/dead stuff with a brush, and dunk/swirl the rock around in salt water if it is fully cured just put it in. Other than that what about lighting?

50% every week!
wow thats alot diffrent then what the guy at the LFS told me: 25-30% every two weeks

He told me to get a HOB filter. he didn't say which one to get but that one of those would work. He did say that all he puts in his, is mesh(you know like the bio bags) and calcium peices or somthing? I forget.

he said for lighting I don't need to get it right now because i need to cycle it first. but he showed me a 28w and a 96w. he said the 28w would be fine unless i want so and so type of coral.

If the HOB filter is just to move the water around the could i just use a rio powerhead? Because I have a Rio 600 just sitting here (it was going to replace the bad pump in the fountain outside but I got that one to work again so I never used the Rio.)
