View Full Version : torch coral
I added a torch coral about one month ago. Origionally it had a couple of dead polyps and 5 live polyps. 2 more polyps died shortly after adding to the tank but the other 3 look terrific. Can I somehow cut off the dead ones without hurting the live polyps?

Just let the living heads grow away enough from the dead ones so you don't cut through living tissue. Then hack away. A dremel tool works wonders, or a hacksaw if you're feeling medieval.
Do I just chop off the top of the dead one? I could use a dremmel. Should I just sand it off or use one of the saw attachments? Thanks for taking the time to help and sorry for so many questions but I am fairly new to reefs.

To quote the great Chevy Chase in Spies Like Us, "Just cut the sucker." ;)
Use the little circular saw cutting wheel doohickey. All you'll be cutting through is dead skeleton. I have a pretty big branching frogspawn (a very similar coral), and when I frag it I just snap 'em wish-bone style. So long as you're staying clear of the living flesh, no worries. And don't apologize for asking questions, we've all got them.
So does the fleshy part stay pretty much in line with the top polyp, or is it tricky to figure out where the flesh is?

Kinda hard to describe - can you take a picture? We might actually be able to draw some cutting lines on a photo to help steer you.
No, I don't have a digital. Thanks anyway I guess I will just have to be as careful as I can.
Thank you for all your help and I'll let you know how it goes.
