i have a penguin 350 and i love it but i dont love buying those stupid inserts because they are pretty much worthless are there places to buy the sponge like material like the AC's have that i can possibly cut to fit?

Why do think the Penguin cartridges are worthless? They are effective, are designed to work with the filter so that the flow rate is properly maintained, and fit in a manner to ensure no water bypass.

If the cost is the problem, get them in multipacks from one of the on-line sellers.. I personally don't think a couple of dollars a month is a lot to spend on maintaining the excellent water conditions that these filters are capable of when you don't compromise the design.

Also, Drs. Foster and Smith have a store-brand cartridge available. In the 24-pack, they're just a little more than $1 each.

i must rephrase that. i feel that the carbon is worthless due to the fact that its only effective as a purifier for about 7-14 days max. after that it accumulates bacteria(which is good) but i feel the bio wheels are a much better media to support bacteria growth. i just want a sponge like material i can use in place of the carbon and if need be add the manufacturer cartridge to help purify. thats all and thank u very much for your input.

Jason,

Just buy the AC material and cut it to fit. Works great. I use the cartridge AND the AC sponge material, but I don't replace the cartridge until it's falling apart.

In some tanks I'm using (can't remember the name) but it's the same blue material the outer layer of the cartridges is made of. It's thinner and great if you don't have much space. It's also cheap and you can buy a huge bag of it for like $6 at an LFS.
