Pacu question...

I'm helping a friend re-do a tank. I'm pretty sure she has a pair of pacu in the tank, and she's lost several small fish over the past year. F'rinstance, she bought a dozen neons two months ago, and now there's just one. Will pacu eat smaller fish? If so, why would one neon survive for two months? Or, should I be looking for other reasons for her inability to keep smaller fish?

Thanks,

Val

Pacu are technically vegetarian, but if the neon is small enough...

I agree with OG. I think that, since Pacus are not exclusively vegetarian, they would snack on a few little fish. The one remaining Neon must just be lucky if this is the case. If the water quality is poor, I would think that the Pacus would die first, actually. I'm going to go with snacking Pacus and a lucky Neon.

Wow, where the heck was my mind?!?!?!...I think I saw that you had just replied to one of my replies or something!!!

Heh, my mom had a similar problem. She put 5 diamond tetras (about 2" long) in a 55 gal with a full-grown Jack Dempsey. All but one of the tetras disappeared over a year ago. I think the one that's left is just really alert and FAST. :-) Probably the same deal with the pacus vs. neons.

Sorry, Faramir...no slight intended!

I'll take it as a compliment. Somehow I'm sure OG is prettier than me....
