Sounds like a common polychaete annelid, or bristleworm. Most of the ones we see are not troublesome.
If it that big it could be a fireworm, and not a good thing to have. We've had a couple over 4 inches long, whiteish with red hairs or legs, We use a turkey baster to remove them when they are out of the holes in the rocks.
We have lots of small bristle worms in a tank thats been established over ten years, and they seem to do no harm.

I agree with Mo, it sounds like a bristleworm. They shouldn't be a poblem unless they get too big.
