Hey guys,

I am thinking of moving my tank however each of the areas I would like to move it to have some draw backs. I am thinking whats best for the fish considering balas are so jumpy. So, I figured I'd get your help.

This is my floor plan with 3 separate places I have 1) power outlets and 2) space.

Here is the breakdown of each location.

BLUE AREA
This is the tanks current position. While its nice to have it here, it is in a high traffic area and that's why I am considering moving the tank. To get to the kitchen you will walk by at a distance of 6" which I know freaks out the fish. The good thing about it is that it does receive indirect sunlight from the windows and deck door. It also is in a high visibility area. Its about 12' from the windows.

GREEN AREA
This is also in a walk way but not as heavily used as most of our time is spent in the living room. As you can see, on the right is the entrance to the apartment and to the left is the stairs to go to the bedrooms. I do like this area however it will receive little light to no light from the windows and door to the deck. Also, being that the entrance to my apartment is a sloping ceiling going down, this area is prone to drafts.

RED AREA
This location would be in the dining room area. It is not in a high traffic area and the only time we use the table is when I am working on my laptop or eating. The bad thing about this location is that it would put the tank roughly 6' from the main living room windows. I am affraid that this, not only could heat up my tank, but also cause algae problems.

So this is my new dilema. What do you guys think??

Well, while on the topic... are you thinking of maybe getting a larger tank? 3 Balas and a pleco in a 45g has me wondering about long-term feasibility. Having said that...

What kind of sun do you get through the windows in the dining area? If it's a direct exposure (rather than a northern view), do you have blinds or drapes you could pull during the day? If so, I think that's where I'd much rather put it. I'm wondering if there's a way to test the temperature flucuations through the day.

I probably wouldn't put it close to the stairs, just because if (and when) you need to move some sizable things, it'd be a shame for someone to bump into and possible break the aquarium.

My windows face north / north west. In september, I will be moving to a much larger townhouse at which point I will upgrade to a 150+g curve front tank which I fell in love with at my LFS.

I am thinking of maybe putting a flower vase on my dining room table and put the therm in it. This will at least let me know what temp increase I should expect. Prob is that there is no way to "save" the highest temp so id have to watch it between say 12am - 2pm.

Well, given a northern facing and the 6 feet of distance between the tank's location and the window, I'd probably feel safe putting the aquarium there, plus I think it'd be great "artwork" to watch during dinner. As long as there isn't direct lighting and enough of a buffer from the heat and cold of the window.

I'm sure someone will disagree... :shark: ... but aesthetically that's what I'd do. :)

I like the green area. It's highly visible and generally out of the way. It's also highly visible to the rest of the apartment. I wouldn't worry too much about drafts. That's what your heater's for, right? Also, water has a high specific heat and air is an awful conductor of heat, so you probably won't have the temperature swings you might think.

For my money, I wouldn't care about getting light from the outside either. That way I have the ultimate control over when the tank gets light.

The more visible your tank is, the more likely you'll be able to spot problems quickly. And it's also a nice showcase for your fish when people come to visit.

Just my two cents. I do agree that it's a good idea to move it from that high traffic area though.

Put the tank where the tv is, not at the angle but on the wall that is shared with the stairs.

Move the tv over closer towards the deck door and switch the couch and love seat.

I wouldn't put it near the stairs for reasons stated above, and the dining area isn't in a high line of sight.

.
Replace the tv with a flat screen and mount it on the wall. :)

But, seriously, could you move the red location toward the kitchen? That might cut down on the sunlight problem.

Yeah I could, but then you would get kitchen traffic going by the tank.

Well after seeing all these great suggestions i really couldnt add anything constructive - so i think i suggest something completely different.

Buy 2 more tanks and place a tank in each - blue, green, and red location.

;)

I also think the powder room could profit of a 5G betta tank.

Best suggestion so far!
