Just over the weekend I bought a canister of seachem kalk. at my lfs. It is the first time I have ever used it. Now the fella that runs the store was very unclear on how to use the product. But here are the directions....
DIRECTIONS: Never add this product directly to the tank. Add 3 g (1 teaspoon) to 4 L (1 gallon*) of water and mix to dissolve. If using pure water, a fully saturated solution is prepared by adding 6 g (2 teaspoons) to 4 L (1 gallon*). Drip this solution into tank. Monitor pH and carbonate alkalinity. Adjust rate of addition to maintain a stable pH (8.3–8.4). HINTS: Adding 4 L (1 gallon*) of a saturated kalkwasser solution to 150 L (40 gallons*) will raise calcium by 24 mg/L. Always use the clear supernatant (top solution) only and do not allow undissolved material to enter the aquarium. Keep this container tightly closed when not in use and minimize solution/air contact to avoid calcium carbonate formation/precipitation.
So i guess my question is the 3 g / gal solution is just for when your doing water changes and the saturated 6g / gal solution is for adding water to make up for evaporate- is this what everybody else gathered???
I have been adding some of the 6 gram solution to the tank and ive noticed a skin developing on the top which looks exactly like the skin that had developed on the top of the five gallon bucket that i mixed the kalk in.
Also I don't have a drip mechanism so I've just been adding the 6 gram solution every other day or so. I removed my glass canopies so more evaporation would take place and ultimately more limewater would be introduced to the tank - do you think this is a safe practice. Do I have any legitimate cause for concern??? Everyone in the tank is doing fine, am I just being a bit finicky???
Anywho, sorry for being so long winded, any feedback will be appreciated.
Regards,
Drew
