Well, it's been a fun two days. Yesterday I agree to take a tank without asking what the occupants are, and end up with an 84gal tank with some 18 various HUGE cichlids, pacus and plecos.

Today, it's midnight, I'm in my pajamas and I know I'm going to be getting a shipment of giant bettas from thailand, I already have too many fish for the tanks I have (funny, you think you're getting an extra tank, and end up with not enough tank space...) so I figure I'll get all adventurous and setup a few empty tanks I have laying around. I set up a couple smaller tanks for the bettas, a 55 for my new oscar, and I have this 35 gallon acrylic tank someone GAVE me. I take it outside, I fill it up, it seems fine. I take it into my master bathroom to set it up on the counter (running out of room for more tanks.. lol) I add the marbles, I add the python and I ALMOST get it all the way to the top when I hear this crrrraaaaAAAACKKING noise.
And I have just enough time to think... "...Oh, no..." before the thing EXPLODES in 35gallons of water, marbles, acryllic, a glass, and three glass candles which were also on the counter, which all shatter across my floor.
Funny, I don't usually think of 35gal as much water, but it managed to soak me, flood my blathroom, my closet and nearly my entire bedroom.
At least I just finished laying down the tile a few weeks ago... but still. I still have baseboards to worry about, and it's now 1am, and I just don't even know where to start with cleaning it up. <sigh>
In fact, my cat just had to walk through it, and it's about half a cat's-paw deep across most of my bedroom.

Maybe the next time someone offers me a free tank, I should just say no..?

It's small, I know, but that's the hex tank sitting in two distinct pieces on the counter. The back of the tank was painted black. Who'da thunk THAT was going to happen?

Wow. What a nightmare.

What are you going to do with the pacu? Sounds like you don't have a 400g tank lying around anywhere and I think 1000g is the recommended size for a full grown one. They can grow to 18" in 4 months, so he's probably pretty young still if he's only in an 84g tank.

the 300 gallon tank in my livingroom leaked one day 5 years ago (hose came off the drat Fluval Cannister and i wan't home at the time) and about 280 gallons made its way to the floor ... of the living room, hallway, and down through the pine floor into the crawl space under the house. the pine boards warped and were ruined. the insulation under the house was ruined. the dampness under the house is still there and smells, causing the rest of the downstairs to smell as well. i removed all the flooring in all the downstairs rooms, including the molding, and replaced it. but the downstairs still smells and i've not gotten around to refinishing any of the flooring. (i know ... 5 years). one of these years i'm gonna get to it. really. no, seriously. i mean it. by the way, i didn't lose a single fish in process. i did learn a valuable lesson however. Fluval cannisters are one of the most poorly made, lousy, crummy, noisy, leaky and just plain terrible filters out there. and did i mention that i hate Fluval?

Man, that sucks! I too have had some leak issues in the past, but nothing like what you've just been through.

There was once a video of a 125g glass tank exploding on the net floating around. Cannot find it now. Apparently what had happened was the person filled the tank with near boiling water to "clean it out" then drained it and filled it with a hose. In the winter. LOL, we need lifeguards in the gene pool!

Sorry to hear about that mishap though. That is my biggest fear. I honestly would cry like a little girl if my tank exploded. It would cost me thousands to fix the damage.

My 250 gl tank leaked a few weeks ago, but I came home just as it started loosing water. I believe I didn't loose more than 5 gallons, but it really sucked.

I just sat in front of it and started thinking of all the work that was ahead fro me. Then, I got ready, stood up and went runnig for bed and slept till the morning. :girl: The next day I started moving my fish and a week later the tank was filled again . :bday: :bday:

Sh*t heppens, as Forrest Gump once said.

In my canister setup, I cut the intake tube to about half tank height preventing this. I for any reason the filter would start leaking, it would stop and leave around 50% of the water in the tank. Still a mess, but the fishies would have enough water to survive the day.

Wow, this is enough to make someone want to give up fishkeeping... WHAT AM I SAYING!?! It's enough to make someone want to at least get a cheaper house in case of a leak anyway.

I had a 10g bust on me once, I had it on the floor temporarily, and I accidentally kicked the side... CRACK! It didn't leak though. I guess 300g puts a lot more pressure on it than 10g. Anyway, I replaced it and used the old one as a template for spray foam DIY backgrounds in my 10g aquariums.
