Hey guys, I am wanting to know how the &^*$ im supposed to vaccuum the gravel in my new little corner hospital/QT tank. I got a little tiny gravel vac, but the tank simply isnt big enough to "shake" the thing and get it working. I am NOT gonna suck on the end of a nasty fish pipe!

LOL Any reccommendations or suggestions on cleaning the gravel in a tank with a tiny footprint?

Thanks in advance~!

This is a very simple method I use to get the water flowing.

Place the gravel vac into the water.... keep placing the tube itself under the water until the tube itself is past halfway full.

At this point put your thumb over the end of the tube to keep the water from escaping when you pull it out of the tank.... place the end of the tube (w/your thumb still covering it) into your bucket... un-thumb the tube....

The water will start flowing on its own as long as the water level in the tube is lower than the bottom of your gravel vac.

This follows the basic concept of siphoning.

Well, I am kinda picky about my stuff, so when I am through vacuuming the tanks, I wash the vacuum, so I feel free to give a little "mouth to tube" action the next time I start up.

Thanks Pedzola, I should have realized that! Works like a charm!

The only drawback is that it can be a little "wetter" than other methods. I always manage to get water all over the place while taking the tube from aquarium to bucket.

You could also cut the large tube shorter so that you could actually shake it to get it started.

lol i remeber the time i swallowed some water ohh that was disgusing casue the tank was a 20g and was very overstocked

I use an accordian pump I purchased at a dollar store to suck water through the tube to initiate siphoning.
