Hi, we bought 4 neon tetras (in a 20 gallon tank) for my son two weeks ago and all has been fine. They appear to like the lower portion of the tank. We leave the light on at night and shut it off in the morning. At feeding time the seem to eat as expected. We feed them 2 times a day for as much as they will eat in a few minutes. ph is 7.4, temp 75

Tonight the room was dark (I'm wondering if this is a part of the problem) we turned on the tank light and feed them, however they did not eat. I've also noticed that they do not school as I would expect, particuarly when the light is on. They stay under the plants or rocks for the most part.

Any suggestions?

thanks
bob

Don't worry, it shouldn't be a probem. In my experience, most fish will be a little shy and skittish right after you turn on the light. Especially neon tetras...talk about a skittish fish to begin with. I find that if I take care to not stand by the tank too much and/or keep my movements around the tank slow and minimal after I turn on the light, the fish seem to "act" a little more comfortable.

Fish do tend to be skittish when the light first comes on, especially if the room was dark. I wouldn't worry too much, it's actually a good thing for them to fast for a day now and then.

One more thing, You should probably get the temp. up to 79-80. 75 seems a bit cool for those little guy's. Good luck !! :dive2:
