Last night I was smoking a cigarette, and gazing at my beautiful aquarium, and it just hit me. Do you think that smoking cigarettes inside is unhealthy for the aquarium? Has anyone else ever thought about this or heard anything about it?

I think this came up once a while back and everyone seemed to agree that unless you were smoking cartons a day, it would not effect the fish. But how nice of you to be concerned :), I think you should me more worried about it harming you

lol .. unless you're exhaling smoke directly into some airline tubing and blowing bubbles into the water itself a little smoke in the air shouldn't be a problem.

If you maintain enough surface disturbance like from a HOB filter, you will have some smoke diffuse into the water. Activated carbon should take care of lots of the poisons like nicotine (Did you know this is used as an insecticide). Though personally I would be more concerned about the smoker's health than the fish health since the levels of poison they will be exposed to is rather minute compared to the smoker.

I was also thinking about that a few days ago when I lit an smoke. I don't really think they will do any harm to the fish... it's more harmful to me.

Before you worry about your fish and the effects of smoking, please look at your health first

The answer, I would say is: of course it affects the fish if they are exposed to it. However, the fish do not live long enough, nor are they exposed enough, for it to show any effects or for cancer to develop and metasticize.

However, I do not allow anyone to smoke anywhere near my cockatiel - birds have delicate respiratory systems anyway.

You on the other hand...well you know.

I don't know. Smoke permeates pretty much every area of a house. Why would your aquarium be any different? Would be interesting to do a test on the water to see if there is any impact on the water quality.
