Does marine tank water have to go through a reverse osmosis system or can you use a brita filter? Is there anything you can buy a the pet store to treat the water?

You could use conditioned tap, but to avoid excess algae and messing with calcium/mag etc. If you're talking about a reef tank, then yes definately R/O.

Take apart a Brita filter and you'll find that it's merely a carbon insert.
Reverse osmosis water is an entirely different animal altogether.
Bite the bullet and purchase a full RO/DI system if you plan on getting into SW and reefs for the long term.
