You guys might remember my booze and cichlid theory.
Well, Here is my theory on convicts.

Why are Convicts so aggressive? All they do is eat fight and breed.
Most hobbyists will buy a few fish from the same tank raise them up and then they breed.
I was guilty of this when I was a kid. Introduce them back into the public. They aren’t realizing they aren’t making a new blood line. I am wondering if there is too much inbreeding.
Did this happen to convicts to often. They all seem to be creatures of instinct. I cannot think of any other fish like the Convict with their intense breeding and fighting needs. No matter how big the tank is once they pair they take half the tank.

These are just my thoughts, I think the Convicts are a bit nuts but I still love them.

good point, and Im guilty too but with pink convicts

Convict are among my favorites. But convict aggressiveness has nothing to do with inbreeding. They are relatively small cichlids who often live amongst larger cichlids against whom they must compete for limited suitable breeding spaces. Thus the aggressivenes and the anxiousness to procreate as much as possible. Other small CA cichlids that need to breed among limited rocky areas - like Neetroplus nematopus - have similar aggresive intincts.
