My roommate recently brought down a 10g fish tank from his apartment. He has done a really nice job setting it up. It’s been cycling for about a week now and looks amazing. He has ran ammonia, nitrate, and ph test and it checks out good. We had the idea that at the end of the semester (3 months) since he’s moving back out of state and I live about an hours trip from school that I would take what ever fish we decided on back to my house. He would then take the 10 gallon home. At my house I have a 60g Seaclear Acrylic tank (2 Aquaclear 500's). At the moment my brother (has his own 45g) has been taking care of it for me. The fish that are currently in the tank are 3 Tinfoil barbs, 2 strange catfish my bro added (not suppose to get larger than 2 inches) and 5 giant Daino's. I was thinking about possibly getting more tinfoil barbs cause then I could have 5, maybe some silver dollars (this maybe to many fish?), or possibly just one fish that would be cool being by himself then moving into a community(a small oscar alternative lol), we also thought about angelfish. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Even if they are only in the 10g for 3 months?
If so would neon tetra's work with my current 60g population?

Tinfoil barbs can reach 14" in length and are very active fish. I personally wouldn't keep a group of them in anything less than a 6 or 8 foot tank. A 60 gallon is definitely not big enough.

Angelfish wouldn't fit in well in your 60 either. They don't like fast moving fish because they get stressed out.

I'd stick with something like platies or swordtails. Easy to keep and should be fine in your 60 gallon tank later. Also very colourful.

Don't put silver dollars in a 10 gallon. They will outgrow it in a month. Agree with the others about the tinfoils in a 10 and 60g. You really need a minimum of 120g (48x24x24) tank for those. Not sure what the dimensions are on your 60g, but at 14" the tinfoils won't have room to turn around unless it's a bare tank with no decorations.

I'd also suggest some livebearers, smaller danios, etc.,.

Tinfoils grow fast. They could grow anywhere from 3-6 inches in that time. In a 10 gallon that would stunt there growth ending up killing them in a couple months

I asked a similar question to this about a year ago and it led me to buy one of my favorite fish to date. If your looking for a centerpiece fish for a ten gallon i would suggest german blue rams, imo possibly the most beautiful small freshwater fish youll be able to buy.

Now with that said, i don't know how they will fair in your larger tank. I've only kept them in my 10 with my invincible zebra danio, clown loaches, and corys.

I had a 30 Gallon in my single room at Northern College. My rez co-ordinator freaked when 4 of us walked down the hall carrying this tank. There was no tank size limit in our rez guide. .... Well it siad Small... but 30 is small comapred to alot of people :P
